Getting More Web Traffic

Posted in internet by someknowledge on March 21st, 2008

Let me just say right here that I know absolutely nothing about getting people to view some web page you happen to post.  As a matter of fact, for today, this site has had no page views at all.  Apparently, when you put a page up on the Internet, nobody knows it’s there unless they happen to find it in a web search or listed on some directory.  I seriously doubt that this article will get any views either, but I’m going to write this anyway.

It should be pretty obvious that if you are trying to sell something or make a reputation for yourself, the more people who see your work the better off you will be.  Two articles I posted yesterday got picked up and listed on outside sites as interesting material.  WordPress marked the comments that were left on my blog from these sites as spam with its Akismet software.   Hell, I had been trying to get my posts listed in directories a couple days ago.  Another site that has been posting the URL of this blog is exercise.com.  I have no idea how they picked up on my blog so fast, but there, I left them a reciprocal link.  Maybe these are spiders just crawling the net looking for interesting stuff.  I have no idea.

If you want to get more site views you will have to put interesting, original material on your site.  This is as simple as placing words or photos with descriptive file names up.  If it’s on the web and accessible to anyone surfing the net, it will potentially be found.  One thing I have looked into is Google Trends.   Here you can find the top ten things random people are searching for at any given moment.  You can also research the search statistics over time for any terms or topics you are thinking about including in your site.  There are many more such sites that track Internet usage statistics.  Just search for “popular web searches” on any engine and you will get lots of leads for where to research popular thought.

The important thing in considering any material for your site is to know your subject.  People do not want to read random pointless material that can be found posted any number of different places.  When I search for information I am looking for specific information on some subject.  Do your research.  For instance, I just now searched Google Trends for the terms “getting more page views.”  These terms did not have enough volume for Google to keep statistics on.  This tells me that this entry will probably not have a high volume of traffic, as people are just not really interested in increasing their web traffic.  The terms “web traffic” however have a consistent high volume of searches, so I have just now changed the title of my blog entry to attempt to capitalize on this information.  All it takes is an open tab in your browser and a few questions to the right robots.

If you want to draw people into viewing your website you need to have material that lots of people are interested in.  There are a lot of people in the world, and more and more of them have access to the net.  Some of the most popular blogs today deal with technology and new gadgets.  Computer and video games also draw a lot of attention.  Gathering material from a number of sources takes time.  If you want to write copy that interests a lot of people you will have to do the research and write in a clear and entertaining style.  Including key words and terms in your text to attract the spiders can only do so much to increase your traffic.  The robots are only there to help people sort out the reams of information that exists on the net.  If you want to have consistent readership for your site, you will have to appeal to people and provide content that is useful for them.
