Is Global Warming a Bad Thing?

with 3 comments

I’m not really sure if global warming and the greenhouse effect are bad for planet earth.  The earth has been much warmer in the past.  Tropical vegetation and dinosaurs used to be found near the poles.  It has only been ten thousand years since the end of the last Ice Age.  Perhaps the earth is warming up as part of its natural cycle back towards a warmer climate.  After so many months of cold and snow here in the northern hemisphere, I’m ready for all the global warming I can get.

Many people like to focus on doom and gloom and the supposed end of the world.  In my opinion this is all rubbish.  The world is not anywhere near ending.  We have a good five billion years or so left before the sun goes red giant and swallows up the planet in nuclear fire.  By then maybe scientists will have stopped predicting the end of the world and will have invented good starships that will take us to new planets to colonize.  So the climate is a bit warmer and the ice is melting.  Ice is bad.  There are whole planets of nothing but ice because they are too far from the sun to be warm enough to be liquid.  Maybe if our climate was warmer we wouldn’t have so many people freezing to death every winter because they are homeless.

So, the temperature of the earth is increasing.  That is a good thing.  When the glaciers come and cover the earth you will have to find a new place to live.  As it is we have warmer summers and winters that are not as harsh.  Some of the polar animals might not be prepared for the lack of ice, but people will be fine.  Instead of crying about all the damage people are doing to the earth, we should be thinking about ways we can benefit from longer growing seasons and milder winters.  Instead of focusing on how the world is supposed to end, we ought to be thinking about how the earth will continue to be a habitable planet for millions of years.   Besides, according to television, it’s the meteors and aliens that are going to wipe us out, not the warm summer breeze.

  2. I think we should care about polar animals and glaciers. We will never see these beautiful animals again if the ice caps melt. I agree there will be some good sides but we cannot be so selfish to not think about animals that are as eaqualy as important as human beings. but this is just my opinion.
