Doing Research

with one comment

This is what I tell myself I am doing every day.  When I am searching for ways to make money on the net, I am doing research.  When I am looking up the various colored rocks found in various places on earth, I am doing research.  When I am invetsigating more ways to get traffic for my blog, it’s just more research.

I go to book stores and do research.  I look through all the books on all the shelves and try to figure out which one of these books will benefit me the most to read.  It’s not just a question of what will entertain me the most.  Learning for me is entertainment.  I go through life trying to find out all I can about things.

Now, why is it so hard to try to figure out something to write about?  I guess it’s because when you write something it is for other people.  I have no idea what interests other people.  I have a few clues from looking at what people read the most on this blog.  But the thing is, other people have their own interests.  I think what you will find if you look at what most people read or look at on the net is that they are looking to be entertained.  People are looking for ways to while away the hours of their days and for things that will make them laugh or be fascinated.  While I have studied acting and literature, I have no idea what entertains people.

If you watch TV you will know what a wasteland the entertainment industry has created.  Celebrities, politics, news, shows about the end of the world.  If a person were really interested in finding things out instead of looking for ways to waste time they would not watch TV.  Movies are even worse nonsense than television, and they cost a lot more.  The library is about the most entertaining place I know.

The Internet is a marvelous place where you can find out anything you want.  Got a question about something?  Type it into Google and get the answer.  You can find out almost anything online.  If you want scientific information on some subject, you might have to pay for an article, but it’s available.  I guess that’s why I spend so much time online, it’s so interesting.

I spent the last couple days looking up information on various gemstones and minerals.  I learned that very high quality Columbian emeralds can sell for more then ten thousand dollars a carat.  I learned about various places where they mine colored stones.  I learned about how to cut and carve gems.  I learned that the gemstone business is not really a good way to make money unless you have a lot of money to invest.  I also learned that I probably don’t want to mine gemstones for a living, but it was interesting to learn this stuff.

So, I’m just writing this one entry today in my blog.  I don’t make any money from blogging.  My best articles are a gripe about a game and a joke about making millions on the net.  Maybe if I gathered up a lot of articles on interesting things I would get more page views, but right now, it’s just a blog and I don’t care who reads it.  Some day in the future I might look back on this and read over what I wrote and think “what the hell was I thinking?”

For now, I’m going to go back to doing research.  Even though it is just reading things that other people wrote, it is still new information to me and will expand my own knowledge.  This is sort of a long entry, but it doesn’t matter.  I can’t imagine anyone wanting to read this kind of a ramble.

  1. Hey, I read it!

I have a small gemstone site online. I don’t sell expensive gemstones, and would like to live in an area that offered more unique gemstone minerals.

Good luck with making your first million !
