Blogging as a Job
If you are going to do blogging as a job you are going to have to find some way to get paid. Even if you don’t get money from your efforts it is still work. You have to think up things to write about. You have to actually write something. If you post pictures or videos you have to produce these. If you are going to make money off your blog you should look at it as a business.
Magazines have been around for hundreds of years. Ever since the invention of the printing press people have been printing up various kinds of articles and stories. In the old days you would sell these pages to your customers for a small amount. On the Internet there is not much sense in charging people to read your blog. There is so much information they would just find something else to read.
What you can sell is advertisements or other products. It’s very simple, really. You write some interesting words about some subject that interests people, then you try to sell them something they might need considering they have read your information in the first place. There is a whole new movement in embedded advertising that uses the text of an article to sneakily try to sell something to people. If I write an article on how good some food is, people will naturally want to try this food for themselves and are potential customers.
I’m not sure I like the idea of turning the Internet into a vast orgy of consumerism. I generally know what kinds of products I need and am seldom influenced by looking at advertisements. If it is a product I would normally buy I might be influenced by a lower price on a new brand, but I am not about to go out and buy new designer shoes just because I saw an advertisement for them. Still, if you are trying to make money you have to do something to get this cash from people. That’s how an economy works.
If you want to actually make a living as a blogger, you will need to get popular somehow. The best way to get popular is to have some kind of useful or entertaining material on your site. If people can get something from reading your words, then they might be inclined to listen to your advice on some subject such as what kind of car to buy. Still, you have to have good information and you need to be clear and to the point when you write. If you waste people’s time they will click away and never return.
There is a lot of competition on the Internet. There is no shortage of websites that contain any kind of information. You might consider condensing information from various sources to include in your blog. Of course, you can include your own opinions and feelings about things. The inportant thing is to have a good amount of useful information that might not be found all in one place. Your own experience in life can be a good source for this kind of information. What specialized knowledge do you have that could be useful to other people?
If you want to work as a blogger you will have to have a good command of the language. It’s not that there is anything wrong with bad grammar, it’s just very distracting and does not serve the purposes of clear communication. You might sign up for a writing course at a community college if you are having problems. You can do nothing better to improve your skills than to read a lot. Reading well-written books and articles is a good way to not only improve your language skills, but it also increases your general knowledge and experience of life.
Blogging as a job is still a very new occupation. There have been writers in many different fields for years, but they have worked for publishers. In blogging you are your own publisher. You will have to check and edit everything you write so that it reads well and is not full of errors. You will have to post information to your blogs, and if you sell information, advertising, or products you will also have to handle all the business aspects of dealing with payments and making sure you post what you sell properly. This can take a considerable amount of time. If your operation gets big you might even have to hire outside help. As in any business, bigger circulation means more work, but also higher payoffs.
If you are just starting out you will have a way to go with posting content and getting material for your site. You will not want to be thinking about selling advertisements until you get a good readership. Concentrate on posting good and interesting content and you will be on your way to making a business out of your blogging hobby.
