Congress Considers Legal Internet Gambling

Congressman Barney Frank has introduced a bill that would effectively legalize and regulate Internet gambling in the United States.  Here is a website that explains what they are trying to accomplish.  You can also get banner ads from this site to place on your own website if you want to refer people to this organization.

Internet gambling has been illegal in America since 2006.  There are still a lot of people who gamble online.  I can see where the government might have a problem with not collecting taxes on people’s winnings or on gambling house revenue.  Still, you would think they would want a piece of the action if there is money involved.

The various state governments run their own gambling operations with the lotteries.  There are also casinos and horse tracks in most major cities.  If people are dumb enough to want to risk their money on a bet, that should be their own business.  Personally, I don’t see any point in gambling.  Maybe it’s because I understand probability.  If a person wants to sit in their home and go broke making bets, maybe they should have the opportunity.

It’s just like governments to do one thing then turn around and do the opposite.  I’m not so surprised that online gambling was made illegal, considering the ability of computers to cheat at games.  Still, it is supposed to be a free country and if freedom means you throw your money away or give it to a gambling house, that’s your own stupidity.
