Spring Arrives, Flowers Bloom
It is a beautiful Spring day today. It is warm enough where I can go outside and not have to wear a coat. I did some work in the back yard this morning, filling in some of the holes in the lawn the dog had dug with dirt from the garden. It was a good way to get some exercise and fresh air. I shoveled and raked the dirt out smoothly so that the grass seeds would have a nice bed to sprout in.
The sun is shining and the sky is blue and there is a fresh breeze blowing. It would be a good day to fly my kite. It’s a good day for anything, really, even sitting in the house reading. I’m listening to the windchimes outside my window right now as I sit here typing. After a long Winter it’s good to finally have some nice weather.
Soon, I will have to start thinking about putting in the garden. I will plow the garden and disk it over to bury the weeds from last year. Then I will get some plants from the garden center and some seeds from the store and start planting once the danger of frost is past in May. Before then I will clean the dead leaves and old plants from the flower box out front and the asparagus patch. Soon, I will prune the grape vines and get them ready for a new season of growing. There is no end to the number of outside things a person can do when the weather is nice.
The rains will come and soak the earth. Spring always comes with rain. It is not usually storms that come early in the season, but long days of gentle rain. It will be pleasant to sit on the porch swing and listen to the patter of the raindrops on the roof. It will be relaxing to listen to the rain falling through the window as I go to sleep.
The change of seasons brings a change in outlooks and patterns of action. No longer do you spend the entire day indoors hiding from the cold. There is fresh air and outside things to be done. There are walks to take in the park and bikes to ride. There is the lawn that will need mowing and all the different outside chores that will have to be done. Out in the barn, the swallows have returned from Argentina where they winter. After such a long flight they will be hungry for insects. Their chattering and aerobatic flights brighten up the day.
There are flowers blooming in the lawn today. They have escaped from an old flower garden that is overgrown with grass. There is all kinds of possibility in the air of Spring. Every dawn brings with it a new beginning.
