New Species Discovered
Each year, approximately 17,000 new species of plants and animals are discovered by science. It is estimated that there are over 10 million unique species that live on earth, with only about 15% of these named and classified. While people worry about known animals going extinct and habitat is being destroyed to make way for farms and cities, there are creatures on this earth that have not even been identified.
Here is a site that has a list of the top ten new species identified in 2007. It would be interesting to find a site with all the known species of life on earth cataloged and identified with photographs. This would of course take a lot of storage space on a server, but it might be useful to people who are trying to see what kind of a bug they have caught invading their flower patch. It would be interesting to explore such an encyclopedia of life and find out about all the animals and plants that exist, where they live, and what people can do with them.
I think it’s cool that we are still finding out about all the creatures that live on earth. There is the dragon millipede, the central ranges taipan, and so many other new creatures that I never heard of before that share the same planet and environment with me. It might be interesting to try and set up a website that lists all the species of earth, but it would take a lot of people. I have enough trouble trying to write a few articles each day. This right here is post 300. If I wrote 100 articles a month on different species, it would take me over a thousand years to write something on all the known species. I just won’t live that long. Still, if I got a thousand people to help me it might only take a couple years.
There are a lot of different creatures that live on earth. There are also a lot of people on earth that share the environment with all these species. Somehow, the earth is big enough to keep secrets from so many people. Who knows what kind of strange life forms we will find in the future. There is no need to go flying off to mars to look for life, when so much life exists on earth. There is enough life on earth to provide ample material for scientists to study for many years to come. Someday, there will be a database of all life on this planet. Someday, we will learn to live in peace with the creatures of the earth.
